Bees and pollen
Made by Buildable Kids
- A bee is fuzzy for a reason. Pollen, the yellow dust in the middle of a flower, sticks all over those tiny hairs while the bee is busy drinking nectar. The bee then combs the dust down into little baskets on its back legs, called corbiculae, and carries it home.
- As the bee bumbles from flower to flower it drops some of that pollen off, and that is pollination. It is how a plant makes seeds and fruit. About one bite in every three of the food you eat, apples, blueberries, melons, even chocolate, is there because a pollinator visited a flower first.
- Most bees in the world live alone, but honeybees are famous for the opposite. They share one big nest, the hive, where a single queen lays the eggs and thousands of workers fetch food and look after the young.
