Spelling practice is most effective when it happens every day in short bursts. This free spelling practice game lets you paste your child's school word list and get straight to work. No account to create, no app to download, and no ads anywhere.
There are two ways to practice. In the regular practice mode your child hears each word read aloud and types the spelling from memory. Words they spell wrong come back sooner; words they spell correctly are spaced further apart so they are not re-tested on things they already know.
The test mode puts your child through the full list in order, just like a real school spelling test. Each word is read aloud and your child types the answer before moving to the next. The score at the end shows exactly which words still need more work.
Most online spelling practice just shows a word and asks kids to copy it. That is not how spelling tests work at school. This game reads each word aloud so your child can only rely on what they hear, which is exactly what happens on test day. The only difference is that they type instead of write by hand.
You enter your child's actual school word list each week, so the difficulty is always right for their grade. Kindergarteners through sixth graders can all use it with the same setup. Just paste the list your child's teacher sent home and start practicing.
Type or paste the words into the text box at the top of the page, one word per line. You can copy and paste a list from an email or a school website. The game saves the list to this device so you can use it all week without typing it in again.
No. In both the practice and test modes the word is read aloud by the computer but it is not shown on screen. Your child has to recall the spelling from memory, which is what builds the skill.
The practice mode uses spaced repetition, which means hard words come back more often and easy words come back less often. It is better for learning. The test mode runs through every word exactly once and gives you a score, which is better for measuring how ready your child is for their school test.
No. The sight words game on Buildable Kids uses Dolch and Fry word lists for early reading. This spelling practice game is for any word list your child's teacher sends home, which changes every week and is specific to their grade and curriculum.
Yes. Each time you enter a new list the old one is saved. You can load any previous list from the saved lists section at the bottom of the setup screen.
