From the sparkle in your eyes to the tips of your fingers, your body is full of amazing surprises. Stretch up tall, take a big breath, and turn the page to meet the incredible you.
The colorful ring in this photo is called the iris, and it is doing a clever job. It opens and closes the little dark circle in the middle, called the pupil, to let in just the right amount of light. In bright sunshine your pupil gets smaller, and in a dim room it grows bigger so you can still see.
A friendly model like this one shows the 206 bones that grown-ups have. Here is the lovely surprise though, a baby is born with about 300 bones. As you grow, some of those little bones slowly join together, which is how 300 becomes 206.
The food on a plate like this is fuel that gives your body energy to run, jump and think. Grains such as bread, oats and brown rice are full of energy your body can use. Whole grains keep the whole grain kernel, so they also give you extra fiber and helpful vitamins.
Look closely at your fingertips and you will spot tiny curved lines. These little ridges formed before you were even born, starting around the third month of growing and finished by about the sixth. You have carried the very same pattern with you ever since.
