The sky puts on the biggest show on Earth, and it is free every single day. Turn the page and watch.
A lightning bolt is a giant spark of electricity. It heats the air around it to about 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, about five times hotter than the surface of the sun, and that air puffs outward so fast that the boom it makes is the thunder you hear.
A rainbow needs two things at the same time: sunshine and raindrops still hanging in the air. White sunlight goes into a droplet, bends inside it, and comes back out split into all of its colors.
A hurricane is an enormous spinning pile of thunderstorms. From a satellite up in space it looks like a pinwheel, with curved rainbands of cloud spiraling in toward the middle.
Every snowflake has six sides. As water freezes, its tiny building blocks lock together in a repeating six-sided pattern, and the whole crystal grows outward following that same rule.
