At the very bottom of the world there is a bird in a smart black and white suit who walks into a blizzard on purpose. Turn the page.
An emperor penguin dad does not build a nest. He balances the egg on top of his own feet, up off the freezing ice, and folds a warm flap of feathery skin down over it. That flap is called a brood pouch, and inside it the egg stays as warm as you are, even when the air outside is far below freezing.
A penguin is a bird that cannot fly, and it does not mind at all. Its wings are stiff, narrow flippers, and underwater it beats them just the way other birds beat wings in the air. A penguin really is flying. It just does it in the sea.
When the wind comes screaming across the ice, emperor penguins pack themselves into a huddle. They stand so close that as many as ten birds squeeze into a square just over three feet across, and huddling cuts the heat each penguin loses by as much as half.
Antarctica is a whole continent buried under ice. In places that ice sheet is nearly three miles thick, deep enough to swallow mountains, and it holds most of the fresh water on the entire planet.
