The pyramids are glowing gold in the sunset, and the Sphinx is waiting to meet you. Turn the page and step into the amazing world of ancient Egypt!
The Great Sphinx was not built from blocks like a wall. Long ago, workers dug a huge horseshoe shaped quarry and carved the whole statue from one single mass of limestone rock. That makes it one of the largest and oldest statues ever carved from a single piece of stone.
Hieroglyphs are a kind of picture writing. Each sign shows something from the real world, such as a person, an animal or a plant. The ancient Egyptians used these beautiful little pictures to write down their spoken language.
Every year the Nile rose and flooded the land beside it, leaving behind water and rich dark silt. That soft soil was perfect for growing food, so farms and villages grew up all along the riverbanks. The Egyptians even planned their whole calendar around the flood, the growing season and the harvest.
Ancient goldsmiths made this mask by heating and hammering sheets of gold until they joined together. The eyes are made of shiny obsidian and quartz, and the eyebrows are inlaid with a deep blue stone called lapis lazuli. Around the shoulders, a broad collar sparkles with colored glass and precious stones.
